Soapbox

So this week... I really don't know what's what.

If anyone's got any bright ideas, I'm ready to hear them.

kyle's going to run a d20 modern space game. He's got it all in his head and he wrote a little narrative for it. He would like us to make 3rd level characters by wednesday. We're going to be members of a military recon team or something like that, I'm sure if he checks this, we'll get more info, so thats whats what.

Ugh... more characters.

Fine fine. I'll just use that Java editor then...

Yeah that's right beotchs another thing to make characters for deal with it. As to more info basically you're in space as memebers of the imperial navy, and you're going to investigate what happened to the ship in the narrative. I'll get copies to you guys somehow. When I get more I'll tell you.

Can I ask why we're 3rd level?

Time and time again I have to ask myself the question of why, oh why are we always low level? We can never do anything interesting at that level, especially with d20 Modern. The Talents and feats available to someone at that level are not interesting in the least, seeing as the two categories are pretty much the same in most, if not all, respects.

I'd recommend at least 6th, as you can enter one or two advanced classes at that point and give the character some breadth and versatility.

I'm just so tired of not doing anything interesting when I'm a PC.

Why cause it keeps things si,ple and simple seems to work best. But fine I'll compro, ise with you 5th level than make sure to tell everyone. Next reason as to why it was low is cause you guys are low in the ranking. You're in a recon ship not too much to it. Just made more sense so that's why it was a low level thing. One question if I may why must everything be statistical with you? Just curious. I'll comment later.

Because that's all we have to determine balance.

I'm of the school of thought that while most people will choose a class because it sounds fun, and not merely because it provides the best abilities or raw numerics, they should not be unduly punished for their choice. No one player should be ultimately better than another at the same table. Either everything has to be as good as the best, or as bad as the worst. It is very hard to find a middle-ground, and that field should not support both the nuke-in-a-can Wizard and the limp noodle Fighter, yet some persist in thinking so. Some people seem to think that martial classes are fine, or that Adepts are fun in Shadowrun, or that going full base class in d20 Modern is okay. That's fine enough for them, but those are people who do not realize that while their Fighter might be good enough for a home game, these are products sold to thousands of people. The system should be inherently balanced so that no one choice is better at accomplishing tasks than another. This paradigm of design is not an option, it is necessity. There is no cosmic force that justifies poor systemic choices just because it "has great flavor." The only thing we are left with is the raw data; the numbers. Things have to be balanced against each other first, and then, and only then, can flavor be injected into it. Yeah. I'm being incredibly hard on the systems we play, but that's just the way I deal with it in the hopes that I can help make it better for my games.

Realize that in this particular case, d20 Modern does not have enough going for it, as a system, to support low-level characters. It's boring.
Example: "I shoot at him. He shoots back. Etc." Where is the fun in that?

What little there is beyond 4th level, when most people start getting into Advanced classes, is marginally better than anything before it. By then you at least have identified your character niche and (sometimes) get better abilities to go along with it.

Like I said fine, be 6th level just tell every one. Here's thew idea of the game so far. You guys are on a assignment to go retrive something (yet to be decided) from the crusier in the narrative. Basically a bunch of "things" attacked the ship looking for this object or info. You guys are a small recon sent to retreve said items. It's like a mix between StarCraft and WarHammer in a sense.

You can abe a enlisty or a con levy it doesn't really matter at the start. We'll build more onto it in game. Cody is going to be the camnding officer cause he asked. In game terms it doesn't change much just information level and end decsions on things.

At this time you guys are not in our galaxy this is a different one, It makes it easier for creativty to flow. So the humans which are you guys are set up in various factions ike Starcraft. IE. The confederacy or Sons of Korhal. And you all weii join up in times of need. Your group is part of the Imperial Navy which is the largest faction of them all. Like Russia but cooler. So if this helps great. Check in later. Thanks for the explaination Josh.

Roark "Rocky" Barhan

That's me.

I have no idea what's up with Cody. I've sent him a couple messages but apparently he hasn't checked in a couple days. I didn't call him because I figured you two would be at work and you'd figure stuff out yourselves.
